When shell is used, it is referred to as Raden.  Usually Abalone shell (Mother-of-Pearl) or Aogai  is used. Should the shell not protrude by purpose, the object is lacquered as many times until the shell is completely buried in the lacquer, so the surface becomes flat and smooth.
